classics of love - common rider (last wave rockers)
“if we take my car then please don’t try and touch the radio…”
this was the natural choice to start this project off for me, i think. it’s never reminded me of any particular moment or any particular song, but of looking at music as a whole—of appreciating all the people who have created and communicated their experiences for you. in particular, there is a certain solidity and dependability to these songs, the ones that will always stay with you and carry you through whatever experiences you have.
i like this song, too, because the way jesse michaels sings about tribe and ella and desmond dekker is the way i want to sing about what his music has done for me. so this song has always had a sense of carrying that tradition forward, as well.
there’s something so pure and sincere about the opening chords. it’s reassuring, i think, and very wonderful in its own right. i sometimes go through phases where i don’t like common rider very much but this song has always meant a lot to me.
