The Mae Shi-“Run To Your Grave”

Hi everybody, my name is Billy, and I just got asked to take over the October Song Journal a week late. I got to stuff a lot in, so I hope you enjoy it.

I’ve been thinking about how I want to go about my selections. Reading through the past few months I see examples of songs inspiring nostalgia,  songs leading to critiques on one’s nature, and even songs acting as a non sequetor to a totally separate thought.

All of that can get boring (to me writing at least).  I really don’t want to sit here and talk about how this song reminds me that the past was better, and I really don’t want to sit here and write that something like this song makes me realize I can get too arrogant for my own good.  But what does that leave me?

Damned if I know.

I’m going to pick songs that instill a certain emotion in me.  I’m going to pick songs that make me think of a specific moment that I can remember in vivid color. Good and bad moments.  I’m going to pick songs I love and songs that I don’t think are very good (in fact, at least one song I plan on using I outright HATE.)  Ok, so maybe I’m going with the nostalgia route…maybe.  I hope I’m going to bring more to the table than that, but I’m probably going to get lazy and phone in half of these.

What should I start with then?  Well, I think I painted myself into a corner with my opening, and instead of editing it to reflect an easier task, I’m just going to press forward and torture myself by trying to meet my super-strict criteria.  It’s something I do….

You know what, fuck my rules. I’ll write about what I want.
