The Pettyfords - I’d Rather Be Playing Nintendo

Hello. My name is Thomas. I’m 27 years old which I imagine is a bit older than the average Tumblrite. I write a blog called Showerbeers and I do a zine of the same name. I am from Oahu, Hawaii and have lived in England and all over the US since I moved away 10 years ago. My main interest in music is punk rock but I listen to just about everything. Blah blah blah blah.

The Pettyfords are a pretty obscure and unknown band outside of Hawaii. In the mid to late 90’s, they brought their brand of helium vocaled weaselcore to our punk scene in Oahu and were hands down one of my favorite bands growing up.

The punk scene in Hawaii is so isolated and remote. Only the top tier punk bands of the time toured to Hawaii (NOFX, The Vandals, AFI, The Offspring etc etc) so  in order to have a local punk scene we really had to do it ourselves. Bands like The Pettyfords, Lose Money, The Knumbskulls, Grapefruit and Unit 101 helped shaped my taste in punk today. I spent most of my teenage years going to shows of local bands in weird locales. I remember one show in particular at Chaminade where The Pettyfords played and everyone there went apeshit. It remains my favorite live show memory of all time. Not because the band or the song or the crowd but because all of those things together came from somewhere so far from the mainland yet thriving and stronger than any other regional punk scene at the time.
