Nice to meet you everyone, I’m Andrew. I was supposed to take over this blog three days ago, but I was too lazy to do it. I wish I had a better excuse, but I was just writing papers that I had put off. Instead of introducing myself further now, I’ll just post a song that I like.
Art Brut - The Passenger
I’m a determined passenger
I never learnt to drive
But don’t worry, I’m not asking for a ride
Some people hate the bus
Not me, I can’t get enough
Some people live in the fast lane
Not me, I take the train
I love public transportation
Train or bus, they’re both amazing
I’ve never liked cars- the song describes me perfectly (and yes, I don’t have a driver’s license). I could talk your ear off about the social, political, and ecological implications of highways, but beyond all that I just don’t enjoy traveling by car. I don’t mean to alienate my new readers by saying this; it just is part of my outlook on life. Nevertheless, the song captures that smug satisfaction that many of us regular riders feel.
A good percentage of my money goes towards train tickets on the perennial Northeast Corridor line between New Jersey and Manhattan. I like cities and trains for many of the same reasons- they’re inherently social, they’re interesting spaces, and just enjoyable to be in, regardless of what you’re doing. I hope many of you feel the same way, because trains are just a better way to travel.
